Waterlooville Recycling Centre: Hours, Booking & Guide
How to use Waterlooville Household Waste Recycling Centre — booking, opening hours, accepted materials, and what to know before you visit.
Waterlooville Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is the main facility serving Waterlooville, Cowplain, Purbrook and surrounding areas. It is operated by Hampshire County Council and accepts household waste, recycling, and garden waste from residents.
Opening Hours
The HWRC is open 7 days a week, but opening hours vary by season:
- Summer (April–September): 9am–6pm
- Winter (October–March): 9am–4pm
Important: The site closes for lunch 1pm–1:30pm every day.
Please verify current hours on the official Hampshire County Council website before visiting, as these can change seasonally or due to maintenance.
How to Book Your Visit
Visits are by timed booking only — you MUST book your time slot in advance. You cannot arrive without a booking.
Booking system: hwrc.hants.gov.uk (click "Book now" and select your HWRC and time slot)
Booking window: You can typically book up to two weeks in advance.
What happens: On arrival, quote your booking reference at the site entrance. Site staff will direct you to the tipping area.
What's Accepted
The Waterlooville HWRC accepts:
- Household waste (general rubbish, non-hazardous items)
- Recycling (cardboard, paper, cans, plastic, glass)
- Garden waste (leaves, grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, branches)
- Bulky items (sofas, mattresses, beds, cabinets — often with a small fee)
- Wood (treated or untreated wood, fencing, pallets)
- Metals (copper, aluminium, steel — sometimes for a fee)
NOT accepted:
- Asbestos
- Gas cylinders or pressurised containers
- Tyres (take to a garage or specialist tyre recycler instead)
- Liquid waste or chemicals
- Electrical items (some retailers accept these when you buy replacements)
- Paint cans with liquid paint (dry paint residue okay)
Driving & Parking
Location: The Waterlooville HWRC is located in the PO7 area, serving residents across Waterlooville and nearby villages. Check the official site for the exact street address and postcode.
Parking: Free parking is available on site — arrive early during peak times (weekend mornings, mid-week late afternoons) to avoid queues.
Directions: GPS/sat-nav directions are available from Hampshire County Council's HWRC finder. The site is clearly signposted.
Van & Trailer Permits
Small vans and trailers are permitted at the HWRC but may be subject to inspection. Loads must not be excessive — site staff will check that waste is from a household rather than a commercial operation. Large commercial loads are not accepted.
A van/trailer permit is NOT required, but commercial skips and bulk loads may be refused.
Fees
Most household waste is free. Some items may attract a small fee:
- Bulky items (sofas, mattresses, etc.) — small fee (typically £2–5 per item)
- Metals and other recyclables — usually FREE
Current fees: Check hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling for the latest pricing.
Top Tips for Your Visit
- Book early: Slots fill up quickly at weekends and during school holidays.
- Arrive on time: You need to be within your booked time slot. Arriving after your slot may mean you cannot enter.
- Sort your waste at home: The site staff appreciate it and queues move faster when loads are sorted.
- Don't overfill: Your vehicle must be safe to drive — overloaded cars are a hazard to others and yourself.
- Check your booking confirmation: It will have your time slot and any notes from the council.
Alternative Disposal Options
Garden waste: Hampshire offers a separate weekly garden waste collection service (subscription-based). Check hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling for current fees.
Bulky items: Some items can be collected from your home by the council for a fee. Contact Hampshire County Council directly for collection requests.
E-waste (fridges, TVs, computers): Some retailers accept electrical items when you buy replacements. The council website has a locator for specialist recyclers.
Tyres: Take these to a local garage or tyre specialist — the HWRC does NOT accept tyres.
