The Best Fish and Chips in Waterlooville 2026: 10 Local Chippies Ranked

Nobody else gets near it on the numbers. A 4.8 from 344 people is the best score of any chippy we could find in the Waterlooville area, and it isn’t a small-sample fluke: that’s hundreds of Friday nights all saying roughly the same thing.

What do they say? Google’s summary of the reviews is freshly cooked fish, crispy batter, generous portions, reasonable prices, friendly staff and “spotlessly clean” premises. The single most-mentioned topic, though, is gluten-free options (10 reviews). If you’re the coeliac in the group who normally ends up with a jacket potato while everyone else eats chips, this is the one to try first. Scampi (5 reviews), large cod (4) and crispy chips (6) come up again and again too.

Cowplain Fish Bar topped the old version of this list, and it’s still right up there: 4.6 stars from 317 reviews. It’s a neighbourhood chippy on Hazleton Way rather than a London Road landmark, and it doesn’t seem to need the passing trade.

The theme in the reviews is people. “Welcoming staff” is mentioned in 11 reviews and “friendly owners” in 4, more than any other chippy here. On the food, Google’s summary points to large portions of fresh, succulent cod and chips that are “perfectly cooked” and not greasy. “Cooked to perfection” turns up in 5 reviews and “clean food” in 6. It also does chicken burgers, and three reviewers mention halal food. If that matters to you, ring ahead to check what’s halal on the day.

Same 4.6 as Cowplain Fish Bar, just a slightly smaller crowd behind it (255 reviews), so it’s third on the tie-break. That’s not a knock. For a village chippy out on Hambledon Road, 255 reviews is a lot of loyal locals.

Cod is the most-mentioned dish (6 reviews). Reviewers also keep bringing up the gluten-free option (5 reviews), which makes this the second-best bet for gluten-free fish and chips after Sam’s. Portions come up a lot too, with “chip portions” and “quality portions” among the topics, as do value for money (3) and the fact that it’s family run. One reviewer put it simply: batter always crispy, fish never dry.

Good to know: the hours are village hours. It opens 4:30–8:30pm Monday to Thursday, all day 12–8:30pm on Friday, and 12–2pm then 4:30–8:30pm on Saturday. 1st Quay sits on the Widley/Purbrook stretch of London Road, and 369 reviews averaging 4.5 make it one of the most trusted chippies in the area. Google’s summary highlights freshly cooked fish with light, non-greasy batter, crispy chips, warm staff and good value. Its price band on Google is the cheapest on this list (£1–10 a head).

The cult item is the jumbo battered sausage, mentioned in 5 reviews, which is more than anything else on the menu. Haddock and chips (3) and “light and flakey cod” also get name-checked. It’s a family-run business, reviewers mention online ordering (5), and it does event catering too.

With 485 reviews, more than any other chippy on this list, Banks is where a huge chunk of Cowplain has ordered its Friday tea at some point. A 4.3 across that many people is a very solid score. Big crowds pull averages down, and this one has held up.

“Freshly cooked food” is mentioned in 16 reviews, more than any single topic at any shop on this list. Google’s summary adds generous portions, friendly staff and things being cooked to order. It also mentions that some reviewers found the service could be inefficient, and “busy atmosphere” comes up 8 times. That’s the price of being popular, so allow for a queue at peak times.

Tucked away on Mill Road, Bill’s is one of the two closest chippies to the middle of Waterlooville (the other is Jade Plaice). It matches Banks’s 4.3, with 291 reviews behind it.

Google’s summary singles out something no other shop here gets: “amazing curry sauce”. It also mentions superb cod with crispy, light batter and affordable prices. Sausages are the most-mentioned item (6 reviews). Reviewers also like that it’s cooked to order (4), the clean interior (4) and the polite staff (4). Two reviewers mention complimentary mushy peas, which is a very good way to be remembered. To be fair, the summary also notes that some reviewers found the chips could arrive cold.

Up at the Horndean end of the patch, 204 reviews average 4.2. Google’s summary says people rate the sausage and chips and name the curry sauce as a top choice. It also mentions fast service and handy individual containers for meals. Pies (5 reviews) and battered sausages (4) are the most-mentioned items, and a few people ring their order through (“telephone orders”, 3).

In fairness: “overcooked” comes up in 3 reviews, and the summary notes some people found the fish overcooked or soggy. That’s why it sits below the top six. On the plus side, one reviewer specifically praises the gluten-free batter. Its hygiene inspection in January 2026 is the joint most recent on this list, and it scored the top rating of 5.

The one for the house that can’t agree: a fish and chip shop and a Chinese takeaway in one, on Hambledon Parade. It scores 4.1 from 108 reviews. The standout topic by a distance is friendly staff, mentioned in 12 reviews. Chinese food comes up in 5, curry sauce in 3 and value for money in 2.

Two reviews mention cash only, so bring cash. Its food hygiene rating is 4 (“good”, inspected January 2025). That’s a perfectly decent score, but it’s the only shop on this list not on the top rating of 5.

Jade Plaice scores a respectable 4.3, so why is it down at ninth? Because only 32 people have reviewed it. A 4.3 from 32 can’t be weighed the same as a 4.3 from 485, so under our rule (explained at the bottom) small samples go after the big ones. It’s also listed on Google as a Chinese takeaway as well as a chippy: rice and chow mein come up in reviews alongside fish and chips.

With only 16 reviews, Plaice on the Hill is too new on Google to judge fairly against shops with hundreds. Its 3.9 could move a long way in either direction. What reviewers do mention is friendly staff (4) and fresh food. The most-mentioned topic, though, is wait time (5 reviews), so if you’re in a hurry, ring your order ahead.

Its food hygiene rating is 5, inspected January 2026. Google lists it in the cheapest price band (£1–10), and one reviewer reports that a large chips fed four of them.
