Butser Hill: 5 things you didn't know

A hill that used to grow wheat, a name that means someone's slope, an Iron Age farm and two Doctor Who shoots.

Butser Hill is 271 metres (889 feet), described as the highest point on the South Downs chalk ridge, though Blackdown is higher within the National Park. Hampshire County Council bought it in 1966, and before that the summit was used to grow wheat.

Butser Hill, the high chalk hill in Hampshire, was once farmed for wheat. Wikipedia says Hampshire County Council bought it in 1966, and before the purchase the summit was used to grow wheat. Today it is only grazed. Here are five more things worth knowing before you walk it.

The name

Wikipedia says Butser comes from the Old English "Bryttes Oran", glossed as "Briht's slope". That is a single-source explanation, so it is safest to say the name is thought to mean that. The sources we checked do not say who Briht was.

How high it is

The hill is 271 metres (889 feet) high. Wikipedia describes it as the highest point on the South Downs chalk ridge, and the Queen Elizabeth Country Park page says it is the highest point on the South Downs. There is a catch, which is why we say "chalk ridge": Wikipedia's Butser page also notes that Blackdown is higher within the National Park. If you are settling a pub argument, specify which one you mean.

A park named after the Queen

Queen Elizabeth Country Park joined Butser Hill and Queen Elizabeth Forest, and it was named after Queen Elizabeth II, who opened the visitor centre in 1976. Even the month is disputed: Hampshire County Council gives April 1976 while some local press says August 1976, so we say only 1976. Wikipedia adds that the park is twinned with Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. The council's own page could only be seen as a search snippet, so the twinning is a Wikipedia point.

An Iron Age farm

Butser Ancient Farm was founded in 1970 under the Council for British Archaeology, and began on Little Butser, a spur of Butser Hill. Wikipedia says it reconstructs Iron Age roundhouses and other buildings to test how they worked, which means the question is not "what did the past look like?" but "would it have stayed standing in the rain?" It later moved to a site near Chalton and Clanfield in 1991, according to the Wikipedia page.

Doctor Who in the forest

Two Doctor Who serials were filmed in the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, according to two location guides: Revelation of the Daleks, filmed in January 1985 at War Down and broadcast in March 1985, and The Mysterious Planet, filmed in April 1986 around Holt Pond and broadcast that September. Both guides are fan-run, and Wikipedia's pages for the two serials do not mention this location, so we flag it as fan-sourced rather than confirmed from official records.

What we could not confirm

A claim that an Only Fools and Horses episode was filmed on the hill appears on one Wikipedia page, but the episode's own page does not confirm it, so we have left it out. The same goes for the architect of the visitor centre, which we saw only in a search snippet. We would rather leave a gap than repeat something we could not check.

Getting there

The hill sits within the country park. We have not checked current opening times, parking charges or trail conditions, so check Hampshire County Council's website before setting off.
