Most curry rankings ask one question: does the food taste good? This one asks a different question first: what did the council inspector find in the kitchen?

Every Indian restaurant and takeaway around Waterlooville has been inspected by Havant Borough or East Hampshire District Council and given a food hygiene rating from 0 to 5. In England a business doesn’t have to display its sticker, so most people never check. We did. Below is every curry house we could match on the Food Standards Agency register, ranked by hygiene score, with the date of the last inspection and the Google rating alongside so you can see both sides at once.

Every hygiene score was checked on the FSA register on 24 October 2026. Google ratings are from our full Indian guide, pulled on 25 September 2026.

What the score actually measures

An inspector looks at three things: how food is handled (cooking, chilling, storage, cross-contamination), the condition of the building (cleanliness, layout, pest control), and how the business manages food safety (records, training, checks).

5 is “very good”, 4 is “good” and 3 is “generally satisfactory”. A 3 is a pass. 2 means improvement is necessary, and 1 or 0 mean major or urgent improvement.

The score says nothing about how the jalfrezi tastes. That’s what the Google column is for.

The 5s: nine kitchens at the top

Nine of the thirteen Indian kitchens we matched hold the top score.

Freshest 5s. Indian Cottage in Horndean was re-inspected on 21 September 2026 and kept its 5. Shalimar on Hambledon Parade was re-inspected on 26 August 2026, also a 5, and with 711 Google reviews at 4.4 it’s the most reviewed Indian in the area by a distance. Mela in Clanfield (March 2026) and Lovedean Tandoori on Milton Road (January 2026) both had a 5 inside the last year.

Older 5s. Flavour Fiesta on London Road (November 2025), Pasha and Kassia Kitchen in Cowplain (March 2025), Red Rose Lounge on London Road (February 2025), Crookhorn Tandoori in Purbrook Chase Precinct (December 2024) and Purbrook Spice on London Road, Purbrook (July 2024).

A 5 from 2024 is still a 5. It just tells you less about the kitchen today than one from last month.

The 4s

Massalla Hut, 244B London Road, was re-inspected on 15 September 2026 and scored 4 (“good”). It holds 4.2 on Google from 137 reviews, and diners rate its curries as fresh and not greasy.

Milton Tandoori, 141 Milton Road, Cowplain, scored 4 in April 2024. It’s rated 4.3 on Google from 89 reviews.

The 3s, and why they’re still worth knowing about

Two Indians score 3, and one of them is the area’s highest-rated curry on Google, which is exactly why this list is worth reading.

Cardamom, 13 South Lane, Clanfield, scored 3 at its inspection on 21 July 2026. Diners give it 4.7 from 151 Google reviews, the best of any Indian around here.

Paprika, 9 Horndean Precinct, scored 3 on 30 March 2026. It’s rated 4.2 on Google from 138 reviews.

A 3 means the inspector found things to improve but nothing that stopped the kitchen trading. Both businesses can ask the council for a re-inspection once they’ve made changes, so these scores can move. We’ll update this page when they do.

The ones we couldn’t match

We couldn’t find Spice Box or Monsoon Indian Takeaway on Hambledon Parade, or Palash Tandoori on London Road, Cowplain, on the FSA register under those names. That usually means the kitchen is listed under a company or former trading name. You can search the FSA register by address to find it.

Clean kitchen and great curry: the best of both

If you want a top hygiene score and a strong Google rating, three places stand out.

Mela, Clanfield: hygiene 5, Google 4.5 from 279 reviews. Open every day.

Shalimar, Hambledon Parade: hygiene 5 from an August 2026 inspection, Google 4.4 from 711 reviews. Open until 11:30pm every night.

Lovedean Tandoori, Cowplain: hygiene 5, Google 4.4 from 131 reviews. Reviewers single out its value.

How we checked

1. Which places: every Indian, Bangladeshi and South Indian restaurant or takeaway in our Waterlooville guide (PO7 and PO8 postcodes), matched by name and address on the Food Standards Agency register.
2. Order: hygiene score first, then the most recent inspection.
3. Dates: each score is shown with its inspection date as listed on the register on 24 October 2026.
4. Google ratings: from our 25 September 2026 pull. They move, so check the listing before you order.
5. Nobody paid to be on this page, and a business can’t pay to change its score. Only a council re-inspection can do that.

Run one of these kitchens and been re-inspected since? Tell us and we’ll update it.

Frequently asked questions

Which Indian takeaways in Waterlooville have a 5 food hygiene rating?
Nine, on the FSA register on 24 October 2026: Indian Cottage (Horndean), Shalimar (Hambledon Parade), Mela (Clanfield), Lovedean Tandoori (Cowplain), Flavour Fiesta and Red Rose Lounge (London Road), Pasha and Kassia Kitchen (Cowplain), Crookhorn Tandoori and Purbrook Spice (Purbrook).
Which Indian restaurants near Waterlooville have a hygiene rating below 5?
Massalla Hut on London Road and Milton Tandoori in Cowplain score 4 (good). Cardamom in Clanfield and Paprika in Horndean score 3 (generally satisfactory), which is a pass.
What does a food hygiene rating of 3 mean?
It means “generally satisfactory”. The inspector found things to improve, but the kitchen passed. The business can ask the council for a re-inspection once improvements are made.
Does the hygiene rating tell me how good the food is?
No. It measures food handling, the condition of the premises and how food safety is managed. For taste, look at Google ratings. Cardamom, for example, scores 3 for hygiene but 4.7 on Google.
Which Indian near Waterlooville has the best hygiene and food together?
Mela in Clanfield (hygiene 5, Google 4.5), Shalimar on Hambledon Parade (hygiene 5 from August 2026, Google 4.4 from 711 reviews) and Lovedean Tandoori in Cowplain (hygiene 5, Google 4.4).
Where can I check a takeaway’s hygiene rating myself?
On the Food Standards Agency website, ratings.food.gov.uk. Search by business name or postcode. Takeaways in England don’t have to display their sticker, so the website is the reliable place to look.
